In Memory of Guff

Some of these poems were written especially for Guff; others are ones which have spoken to our hearts.

              For Guff

(This poem was written by Janelle, a cousin of Guff, and was read by her at his funeral)

The impressions of your face
I've painted in our memories.
Even though you are not with us,
We will always be with you.
Even though you were so close to us,
God felt it would be better if you were with Him,
Safe-cradled in His arms in heaven.
Now we find ourselves in question,
Never thinking we would say one last good-bye.
I can think back to the memories--the good and the bad,
The smiles, the laughter, the sobs, and the sorrow.
You were so amazing in every way.
We will say a prayer for you every night.
Now we know if we ever need
Warmth, strength, support, or comfort,
In our memories we will find you.
Bye, Guff; I love you.

         A Poem for Guff

(This poem was written by Lindy, a friend of Guff.)

There is no plan, not in my life.
I let myself love you,
In hopes to someday be your wife.
Everything has to always end.
Just why did it have to end now?
Why did I have to lose my best friend?
I feel I am about to fall;
Please catch me again,
When you hear my call.
I've shed for you all of my tears;
I've learned to be whole again.
Now, all alone, I am facing my fears.
If I have to lose you,
Then don't forget you loved me,
And know I loved you, too.
There is no plan;
But if this is good-bye, then
Know that I was always your biggest fan.

            The Last Good-bye

(This poem was written by Kristy, a friend of Guff)

With wings so soft and white as snow,
A halo shining gold,
The harp she played enchantingly;
He did what he was told.

She asked him to come with her;
She gently took his hand.
He whispered back into her ear
His last and only command.

"Tell them how I love them;
I'm sorry I had to leave.
Say my last good-byes for me;
Tell them not to grieve."

She promised him his last request,
A twinkle in her eye.
He turned from the abiding light
To say his last good-bye.

"Daddy, hold my memories;
Mommy, please don't cry;
Sister, keep me in your heart;
It's time to say 'Good-bye.'"

"I love you; please don't cry for me.
I'm your guardian angel now.
I'll protect you 'til we meet again--
Someplace, sometime, somehow."

                A Teenage Tragedy

(This poem was written by Elsie, a family friend.)

What demons drove him that night
To take that final, fateful step
From out of the darkness of despair
Into the blinding light
Of a speeding midnight train?

He could not know
How it would hurt
His friends and family left behind--
Their tears and grief....long suffering.
Tragic news is never kind.

No one will know if he sought release
From storms and strife within;
And were his thoughts...
     "My world's at peace
      Forever
     When I die."

Now the darkness of death
Is behind him.
We hope he found peace
In the Light of the Lord.

Please Listen to Me, Mom

Please listen to me, Mom,
As I take the time to write.
I see parents struggling daily--
Their pain is such a fight.

All of us who have gone on
And left the rest of you behind,
We're all OK, Mom, I promise--
Heaven is beautiful, and God is kind.

You used to tell me that one day
God would call and take you home.
You told me you'd make me strong
So I would stand tall when alone.

But things happen sometimes, Mom,
That do not go with our plans.
I wasn't scared, Mom,
When God held out His hand.

I didn't want to leave you;
I didn't have time to say good-bye;
When the angels said, "Come with us,"
There wasn't time to question why.

I've watched you daily, Mom;
It hurts to see you cry.
I don't want you to be unhappy
Just because we didn't say good-bye.

Tell the others what I'm telling you--
So many parents need to know--
That earth was just a layover;
We had another place to go.

I know you miss me, Mom;
I know your heart was broken in two;
But God really needed me
Because my earthly life was through.

I'm always alongside of you--
I smile and touch your hair.
I whisper, "Mom, I love you."
You just can't see me there.

Tell the parents, Mom, for me
That all of us kids are OK;
God had plans for our lives
When He called us home that day.

I love you, Mom, and I always will;
Remember I'm not far away.
We're going to be together again
When God calls out your name.

For My Dear Family

Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free.
Some things I'd like to say;
But first of all to let you know
That I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from Heaven,
Where I dwell with God above,
Where there's no more tears or sadness;
There is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy
Just because I'm out of sight;
Remember that I'm with you
Every morning, noon, and night.

That day I had to leave you
When my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me,
And He said, "I welcome you."

"It's good to have you back again;
You were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family,
They'll be here later on."

"I need you here so badly
As part of My big plan;
There's so much that we have to do
To help your fellow man."

Then God gave me a list of things
He wished for me to do,
And foremost on that list of mine
Is to watch and care for you.

And I will be beside you
Every day and week and year;
And when you're sad, I'm standing there
To wipe away each tear.

And when you lie in bed at night,
The day's chores put to flight,
God and I are closest to you
In the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth
And all those loving years,
Because you're only human,
They are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry;
It does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers
Unless there were some rain.

I wish that I could tell you
Of all that God has planned;
But if I were to tell you,
You wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain,
Though my life on earth is o'er,
I am closer to you now
Than I ever was before.

And to my very many friends,
Trust that God knows what is best.
I'm still not far away from you;
I'm just beyond the crest.

There are rocky roads ahead of you
And many hills to climb,
But together we can do it,
Taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy
And I'd like it for you, too,
That as you give unto the world,
So the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody
Who's in sorrow or in pain,
Then you can say to God at night,
"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented
That my life was all worthwhile,
Knowing as I passed along the way,
I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody
Who is down and feeling low,
Just lend a hand to pick him up
As on your way you go.

When you are walking down the street
And you've got me on your mind,
I'm walking in your footsteps,
Only half a step behind.

And when you feel the gentle breeze
Or the wind upon your face,
That's me giving you a great big hug
Or just a soft embrace.

And when it's time for you to go
From that body to be free,
Remember you're not "going,"
You are coming here to me.

And I will always love you
From that land way up above.
I'll be in touch again real soon.
P.S.  God sends His love.

Love, Me
